Every term you'll meet on the DAT Perceptual Ability Test, defined in plain English — the PAT itself, all six sections, scoring, and the concepts behind them.
The DAT, the PAT & scoring
- Dental Admission Test (DAT)
- The standardized exam used for admission to U.S. dental schools. It has four parts: the Survey of the Natural Sciences, Perceptual Ability, Reading Comprehension, and Quantitative Reasoning.
- Perceptual Ability Test (PAT)
- The visual-spatial reasoning section of the DAT. It contains 90 questions split evenly across six subsections, taken in roughly 60 minutes and scored on a 1–30 scale.
- PAT score
- The PAT is reported on a standard scale from 1 to 30, separate from your Academic Average. A score around 20–21 or higher is competitive at most dental programs.
- American Dental Association (ADA)
- The professional organization that develops and administers the Dental Admission Test.
- Question generator

- Keyholes
- A 3D object is shown on the left; choose which of five apertures it could pass completely through in some orientation.
- Top Front End
- Given two of the three standard views (top, front, end), determine the correct third view — tracking solid (visible) and dashed (hidden) lines.
- Angle Ranking
- Four angles are shown; rank them from smallest to largest. Differences can be only a few degrees, so the eye has to be trained.
- Hole Punching
- A square sheet is folded one or more times, a hole is punched, and you determine the full pattern of holes on the unfolded 4×4 grid.
- Cube Counting
- A figure built of stacked cubes is painted on all exposed sides; you count how many cubes have exactly a given number of painted faces.
- Pattern Folding
- A flat 2D pattern with shaded and patterned faces is shown; choose which of four 3D figures it folds into.
